ARTISTS’ STATEMENT
Letters from Noordhoek records the correspondence between artists Wilma Cruise and Karin Lijnes during February and March 2013. On a daily basis the artists hand delivered their letters to each other. The A3 sized folios are visual musings on a range of matters from the verbalisations of fictional characters such as Cruise’s H.D. Arnoldus and Lijnes’ Purelove, to the deaths of parents. Working with no firm premise in mind other than the too and fro of the sheets of paper, the ensuing responses are by turns angry, thoughtful and playful. Collectively the letters become a visual and textual meditation on life, death and the meaning of art.

Literary Notes

Grande Provence Gallery for Literary Festival May 2013

The idea was to make a work for the Literary Fes., purely responding on a visual and textual level to contemporary and classic South African books. Some authors I refer to are: Steve Biko; Helen Moffat; Reneilwe Malatji; Donve Lee; Olive Schreiner; Sol Plaatjes; Sindiwa Magona; Finuala Dowling; JM Coetzee; Tracey Farren; Joanne Hichens … My arrangements are often grid-like, inviting the viewer to engage with an apparent orderly space but on closer inspection one may find a dissonance of 'texts' and rupture of expectation.
