Plastic 2000 - 2008

The plastic shopping bag is a metaphor for the mass produced object in consumer culture, and when no longer needed, it is discarded.

Sewing into plastic with glass/ceramic beads is strange but in the process uncovers threads that might link the different 'contexts' of mass production on the one hand and the slow, hand worked image, on the other. I see the bags as my own appropriated brand/logos and 'tongue-in-cheek' commentary. The images are mostly 'misappropriated' from news media. What is interesting to me is the uncomfortableness of working with material so repellant and then making these into 'containers of exchange' through the slow, but intensely meditative process of stitching and beading.

According to Tao nothingness is a letting go and being able to see everything but labelling nothing. Thomas Merton says we cannot know our nothingness unless we love it. Words stand between the silence of things and the silence of our being.

Plastic bags take from 500 - 1000 years to decompose, unless oxo-biodegradable. And they make for 25% of all landfill.
